Morgado Golf Course: A Championship Gem in the Algarve
Nestled at the foothills of the Algarve's Monchique Mountains, just a short drive from the vibrant seaside town of Portimão and the charming fishing village of Alvor, Morgado Golf Course is home to the prestigious Portuguese Open Championship. This par-73 course offers a stunning and varied layout that caters to golfers of all levels, providing a memorable experience from start to finish.
Morgado presents two distinct sets of nine holes — the front nine features a flatter landscape, while the back nine introduces more undulating terrain with breathtaking views of the Monchique Mountains. The back nine also brings an extra challenge as the valley's mountain-sided topography creates a funnel for gusting winds.
The golf course is walkable for those up to the challenge, but when the weather heats up, a buggy is highly recommended, especially given the well-designed access paths to the fairways. Though the overall course length is manageable, the par 3s on the front nine stand out with two nearly 200-meter holes, requiring precision and skill. Fortunately, the shorter par 4s balance the challenge, offering opportunities for golfers to hit the green in regulation.
Strategy Tip: Build a strong score on the front nine and treat it as a warm-up for the more demanding back nine.
The highlight of the round comes at the spectacular 18th hole, a signature finishing hole with an elevated tee that reveals a panoramic view of the undulating fairway guarded by bunkers and the welcoming Clubhouse in the distance. It's a breathtaking scene and a fantastic way to end your round — by par, birdie, or simply with a smile on your face.
Beyond the golf, Morgado offers a peaceful escape immersed in the natural beauty of this tranquil side of the Algarve. With impeccable course conditions and thoughtful management improvements, this championship course will leave you eager to return.

With high temperatures in the Algarve, Morgado's fairways reach temperatures of 42 degrees Celsius, but the course remains in excellent playing conditions, as a result of the improved work of the maintenance team. Players are advised to choose to play early in the morning.

Greens were in amazing condition, the best of the trip. The course itself was a bit underwhelming. Also abandoned hotel/buildings around the course.

OK experience - staff good course generally good but new buggy rules caused so much more walking that it was unpleasant

Staff were excellent. Starter was really helpful and knowledgeable. Greens were on good shape and rolled well. Tees and fairways need some work.

Although the course was in decent condition, the overall layout of the course was very boring and not inspiring to play.

Morgado Golf Course impressed us during our round on Wednesday, particularly given the challenging conditions of heat and limited water. The greens were in excellent shape, while the fairways and tee boxes were well-maintained, presenting the course nicely. Continuous improvements are evident, with efforts to enhance and decorate the extensive areas surrounding the course. The plantation of native plants and the meticulous cleaning of waste areas have significantly enhanced the visual appeal and overall ambiance.
However, there was a noticeable lapse in attention to some commercial aspects, such as the absence of the buggy bar on such a hot day, with no prior notice given. This is an easily fixable issue, but it did impact the experience, making it an 8 out of 10 rather than a perfect score.

Beautiful setting & course with lovely wide fairways....ideal for the not so skilled golfer! Greens were like carpet. Clubhouse Okay & food was tasty. However, a long winding driveway made for a depressing first impression as there were many large drab unfinished, run down apartments on the approach. Many of these could also be seen as you made your way around the golf course. Having a meal afterwards overlooking the course your eye is yet again taken with a very sad looking incomplete structure.....pity. I would still recommend the course itself as it is very well maintained.

Course was really nice, but our transfers were 20-25 minutes late so we didn’t have time to look around and practice before hand
*Parkland - Total
*Undulated - Rolling terrain more hilly on the back 9
*Buggy Recommended - Recommended due to back 9
*Signature Hole - 14th
*Water hazards - On both 9's, but all visable
*Exposed - Wind direction and speed, play a big part in club selection
*Dogleg - Slight ones on the back 9
*Comments - Inland course, very good value for money
