Penina Champoinship Golf Course was previously known as the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Golf Course. The main 18 holes provide the most demanding test of a players skill in the Algarve, if not in Portugal. The inevitable difficulty that a flat landscape and terrain creates with club selection, the holes are crossed and flanked by a series of streams, ditches and water hazards, demanding precisely executed shots to avoid trouble and achieve par.|The course is beautifully maintained, winding past tall stands of eucalyptus and clumps of palm to mainly elevated greens which have subtle slopes and sometimes treacherous speeds.

It was nice to at last visit Penina today as hadn’t done previously. However we were extremely disappointed with a few aspects of our visit. We do not intend to visit again as a result.
Firstly we arrived to be told that there were no buggies or electric trolleys left, but we could have pull trolleys. However it did appear that hotel guests all had buggies reserved for them.
Secondly, the course was really in a terrible dried out state with very little grass on fairways etc. such a shame as could see that the layout was really good with well defined holes.
Today, the course was extremely busy. Waits at every hole.
No sign of any drinks buggy out on course.
Overall a very poor experience.

Platz in sehr schlechten Zustand. Service auch nicht gut, keine Carts bis kurz vor Beginn. Des Öfteren keine Infotafeln zum Bahnverlauf. -**- Course in very poor condition. Service also not good, no carts until shortly before the start. Often no information boards about the course.

Most definitely one of the worst condition courses I have ever played, there was barely a blade of grass on the fairways and the greens weren’t much better. Completely run down and tired which was a disappointment to everyone in my group. If I could give it a negative score I would

Course layout was nice, condition was average in the front 9. Back 9 was much better. Hotel and resort is looking tired.

Staff were very nice but, like everyone's comments I’m sure, the course and infrastructure sadly lacks investment.

Fairways very poor with many bare patches. Greens had bare spots on them. Buggies very dirty and stained and in a very poor condition

Course in very bad condition. Bad tees and fairways, course very untidy.
Way too expensive for a golf course in such condition.

We have played Penina Championship many times over the years and always found it a good challenge. This year the course seems to have suffered from lack of attention, particularly on the tee boxes and fairways. Hopefully these will be addressed and the course will comeback to its former glory.
